When Cessna redesigned the famous Cessna Citation CJ series, known for its low operating costs and high performance, it resulted in the Cessna Citation CJ2, which later became larger and faster than its predecessor.

The design philosophy of the Cessna Citation series can be summarized in three words: simplicity, economy, and performance. Previous models utilized straight wings, which significantly slowed down the aircraft but reduced production and design costs.

The current model has improved airflow over a longer period, enhancing wing characteristics by ten to fifteen percent compared to previous straight-wing designs. The cabin itself is larger than its predecessor by 33 inches, and the wing length has increased by thirty-five.

Fuel consumption is greatly reduced while flight speed is increased by thirty knots compared to the Citation CJ. The aircraft is fuel-efficient, with an average fuel burn of 140 gallons per hour, primarily due to the Williams/Rolls-Royce engines chosen by Cessna, which produce a thrust of up to 2400 pounds each.
